Coin Details
Description
This 1963 bronze medal at 39mm commemorates the West Virginia State Capitol building during the state's centennial year. West Virginia achieved statehood on June 20, 1863, when it separated from Virginia during the Civil War — the only state to be formed by seceding from a Confederate state. The State Capitol in Charleston, designed by architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1932, features a gold-leaf dome that rises 293 feet above the Kanawha Valley. Commemorative medals serve as primary historical documents, recording events and honoring individuals in a format that was often produced closer to the actual occurrence than published histories or official records. The 1963 centennial celebration produced numerous commemorative items including this medal series, which documented the architectural landmarks and historical milestones of the state's first hundred years.
