Description
This 1962 silver medal at 39mm from the SH-25-8 series features the World of Entertainment pavilion from the Century 21 Exposition. The silver version of the Entertainment design completes the precious metal offering for this particular pavilion theme. Entertainment and popular culture were significant components of the fair's appeal, drawing visitors beyond those interested solely in science and technology. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. Regional and local commemorative medals provide historical documentation of community celebrations, institutional milestones, and civic achievements that may be poorly represented in other primary source material. The silver medal version of each Century 21 design was consistently produced in smaller numbers than its bronze counterpart, making complete silver sets particularly challenging to assemble.
