1962 Medal Century 21 Expo Lg Gold
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1962 large gold medal commemorates the Century 21 Exposition, Seattle's world's fair held from April to October 1962. The fair introduced the Space Needle, the Monorail, and a vision of life in the twenty-first century to nearly ten million visitors. As a gold medal in the large format, this represents the premium tier of Century 21 commemorative medals. The exposition was conceived partly to stimulate the economy of the Pacific Northwest and partly to showcase American technological achievement during the Space Race with the Soviet Union. The fair's theme of futurism — with exhibits on space travel, science, and modern living — reflected the optimism and ambition of the early Kennedy era. Gold exposition medals served as high-value souvenirs and presentation pieces, given to dignitaries and sold to affluent collectors.
Rarity Notes
Gold, large format. Very limited mintage for Century 21 Exposition. Gold medals from world's fairs are scarce survivors.
