Description

This 1962 bronze medal at 75mm, cataloged as D1962-2b, honors General Douglas MacArthur, one of the most decorated and controversial military leaders in American history. MacArthur's career spanned from World War I through the Korean War, including his role as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the Pacific during World War II and his transformation of occupied Japan into a democratic nation. The large 75mm format provides a commanding canvas appropriate for a figure whose outsized personality and military brilliance made him one of the dominant American leaders of the twentieth century. MacArthur died on April 5, 1964, making this medal one of the last official commemoratives produced during his lifetime. His famous "I shall return" promise upon leaving the Philippines in 1942, fulfilled at Leyte in October 1944, and his dramatic farewell address to Congress in 1951 declaring "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away" are among the most quoted statements in American military history.
