Coin Details
Description
This 1960 bronze medal at 57mm, cataloged as D1960-2d, is the Pony Express Rider's version of the centennial commemorative, specifically honoring the individual riders who carried the mail across the frontier. The Pony Express employed approximately eighty riders at any given time, with each covering a 75-100 mile segment at top speed before handing the mochila β the specially designed leather mail pouch β to the next rider. These young men, many still teenagers, became symbols of individual courage and endurance in the American West. William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody claimed to have been among them, though historians debate the claim. The D1960-2d catalog number may share die elements with the Reenactment version (PCGS #75937), with the distinction noted in title and specific dedication rather than die design. The Rider's medal honored the individuals whose personal bravery made the Pony Express legend possible.
