Description
This 63mm gold medal produced in 1959 by Medallic Art Company of New York commemorates Alaska Statehood, marking Alaska's admission as the forty-ninth state of the Union on January 3, 1959. Alaska's statehood was a momentous occasion, adding the largest state by area to the nation and extending American territory deep into the Arctic. The gold composition at 63mm diameter represents an extraordinarily valuable and prestigious commemorative, as the amount of gold required for a medal of this size would have been substantial. This was almost certainly a very limited production piece, a presentation medal for the governor, congressional delegation, or other key figures in the statehood campaign. Alaska's journey to statehood had been long and contentious, opposed by canned salmon interests and others who preferred territorial status, and the achievement of statehood was celebrated enthusiastically across the new state. Medallic Art Company's production of a gold statehood medal at this impressive diameter demonstrates the firm's capability for prestigious precious metal work at the highest level and reflects the significance accorded to Alaska's entry into the Union.
Rarity Notes
