Description
The 1955 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-99, features President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the obverse. Eisenhower, the supreme Allied commander in Europe during World War II, had been elected president in 1952 and was midway through his first term when this medal was produced. His portrait on the Assay Commission medal began a new presidential sequence comparable to the extended Roosevelt runs of the early century and the 1930s-1940s. The 1955 commission tested coins from a year notable in numismatic circles for the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln cent, one of the most celebrated error coins in American numismatics. The absence of a 1954 entry in the known JK-AC catalog sequence (jumping from JK-AC-98 in 1953 to JK-AC-99 in 1955) indicates either a gap year or a numbering anomaly in the series.
