Description

The 1947 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-92, returned to the generic Annual Assay Commission theme featuring the Philadelphia Mint building rather than an individual portrait. The 1947 commission examined coins from the first full year of postwar coinage production, when the Mint resumed normal alloy compositions — standard copper-nickel five-cent pieces replaced the wartime silver alloy, and bronze cents returned to their pre-war composition. The Philadelphia Mint itself was a fitting subject for the medal, as the institution had served as the heart of American coinage since 1792 and had performed heroically during the war years, operating around the clock to meet unprecedented demands for coinage. The postwar years brought new challenges including pent-up demand for circulating coins and the need to replenish stocks depleted during the war. This medal documents the Assay Commission's role in verifying that the transition back to peacetime standards was executed properly.
