Description

Reed-Brenner 42-70-T-5 is the fifth and final experimental wartime token pattern from 1942, concluding the T-series investigation into token-based alternatives to the copper cent. The completion of five distinct token experiments alongside the extensive cent composition tests demonstrates the thoroughness of the Mint's approach to the wartime copper emergency. By the time the testing program concluded, the zinc-coated steel cent had been selected as the solution, and the token concept was set aside. The five T-series patterns, together with the four X-series cent experiments, represent the Reed-Brenner contribution to the wartime testing program that also produced the better-known Judd-numbered patterns (J-2051 through J-2081). Collectively, these experimental pieces constitute the most comprehensive alternative-composition study ever conducted by the United States Mint, a direct consequence of the unprecedented material demands of global war.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8. Extremely rare. As the final token experiment, T-5 was produced in the smallest quantity of the series.
