Description

Reed-Brenner 42-70-T-3 is the third experimental wartime token from 1942, continuing the Mint's investigation of token-based alternatives to the copper cent. By the third iteration, the Mint was refining the most promising design and material combinations identified in earlier experiments. The token experiments ran parallel to the main composition testing program (the Judd-numbered J-2051 through J-2069 series and the RB X-series), representing a fundamentally different philosophical approach to the same problem. While the composition experiments asked "what material can replace copper in a cent?", the token experiments asked "can we replace the cent itself with something simpler?" The Mint's decision to pursue the composition-change path rather than the token path shaped the future of American coinage, establishing the precedent that denomination identity should be preserved even when material circumstances force composition changes.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8. Extremely rare. The token series is among the least documented of the 1942 experimental programs.
