Description
This 1939 brass token at 32mm diameter, cataloged as TC-425117, commemorates the 1939 New York World's Fair, one of the most famous international expositions of the twentieth century. Held in Flushing Meadows, Queens, the fair's theme "The World of Tomorrow" presented a utopian vision of the future featuring television, fluorescent lighting, nylon, and other technological innovations. The iconic Trylon and Perisphere structures became symbols of the fair and of modernist optimism. Over 44 million people visited during its two seasons in 1939 and 1940. The brass composition and generous 32mm diameter made this a substantial souvenir piece. World's Fair tokens and medals are one of the most popular collecting categories in exonumia, with the 1939 New York fair generating hundreds of varieties.
