Description
The 1936 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-81, features President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his second year on the series. The 1936 medal was produced during the year of Roosevelt's historic reelection landslide, when he carried every state except Maine and Vermont against Republican Alf Landon. The Assay Commission examined coinage from what numismatists regard as the peak year of the classic commemorative half dollar program — seventeen different commemorative issues were produced in 1936, an extraordinary number that included the Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbia, Elgin, Gettysburg, Long Island, Lynchburg, Norfolk, Oregon Trail, Rhode Island, Robinson-Arkansas, San Diego, and Wisconsin commemoratives, among others. This proliferation would lead to congressional reform of the commemorative program. The bronze composition indicates standard distribution to commission members at the annual Philadelphia Mint proceedings.
