Description

Judd-2041, Pollock-2231, is a pattern for the San Francisco Mint version of the 1935 Daniel Boone Bicentennial commemorative half dollar with the 35/34 overdate. The "S" mint mark distinguishes this from the Philadelphia Mint pattern (J-2040). The San Francisco Mint 35/34 overdate Boone half dollar is one of the rarest classic commemoratives in regular production, with a mintage of only 2,004 pieces. A pattern for this issue is therefore exceptionally significant, as it documents the die preparation for one of the scarcest regular-issue classic commemoratives. The overdate was created when the Mint re-engraved 1934-dated dies with the new 1935 date, a cost-saving measure that produced a clearly visible underdigit. The San Francisco Mint's involvement in the Boone program was limited — it participated only in the 1935 production and only with the overdate dies — making S-mint Boone material of any kind highly sought after by classic commemorative specialists.

Rarity Notes

R-8. Extremely rare. Patterns for the San Francisco Mint Boone 35/34 overdate are among the rarest items in the Design Reform pattern series, given the tiny production mintage of the regular issue.
