Description

Judd-2040, Pollock-2230, is a pattern for the 1935 Daniel Boone Bicentennial commemorative half dollar in the "35/34" overdate variety. The Boone half dollar was originally authorized in 1934 to commemorate the bicentennial of Daniel Boone's birth, with designs by Augustus Lukeman depicting Boone on the obverse and Boone with Chief Black Fish on the reverse. When production continued into 1935, some dies were created by re-engraving the date on existing 1934-dated dies, producing a visible 1935/1934 overdate. The Philadelphia Mint variety is distinguished from the San Francisco Mint version (J-2041). The Boone half dollar series became one of the most controversial classic commemoratives: it was produced annually from 1934 through 1938, with multiple mint marks each year, generating criticism from collectors who felt the program had become exploitative. This pattern documents the die preparation process for the 35/34 overdate, which is one of the most sought-after varieties in the classic commemorative series.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8. Extremely rare. Patterns for the Boone 35/34 overdate are very scarce, even more so than the regular commemorative issue which is itself quite rare.
