Description
The 1932 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-76b, is a variant of the Mount Vernon design attributed to engraver John R. Sinnock. Sinnock, who would become Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint in 1925 and serve until his death in 1947, was responsible for numerous medal and coin designs including the Franklin half dollar and the Roosevelt dime. His rendering of Mount Vernon on this Assay Commission medal variant may represent a different interpretation of the estate or a modified die from the JK-AC-76a version. The existence of multiple variants for a single year's Assay Commission medal is unusual and indicates that the Washington bicentennial celebration prompted extra attention to the medal's design. Sinnock's involvement gives this variant particular interest to collectors who study the work of individual Mint engravers. The bronze composition and commission medal format remain standard.
