Coin Details
Description
This 1928 bronze token cataloged as TC-120734 commemorates Thurston the Magician, the stage name of Howard Thurston, who was the most famous stage magician in America during the 1920s and early 1930s. Thurston succeeded Harry Kellar as the dean of American magicians and toured the country with elaborate full-evening magic shows that filled major theaters. Advertising tokens were a common promotional tool for touring entertainers, distributed to audiences as souvenirs and to generate word-of-mouth publicity. Thurston was known for distributing cards, tokens, and other memorabilia to his audiences, particularly to children. The bronze composition made this token durable enough to survive as a lasting memento of seeing Thurston's spectacular show. Magic-themed tokens are collected within both numismatic and magic memorabilia markets.
