Description
This 1928 silver medal, cataloged as FH-645 (Fuld-Higby), commemorates Charles A. Lindbergh — the aviator whose solo nonstop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927, made him the most famous person in the world. Lindbergh's achievement in the Spirit of St. Louis triggered an unprecedented wave of commemorative production, with hundreds of medals, tokens, and souvenirs produced in the years following the flight. The FH-645 designation places this within the Fuld-Higby catalog of American medals. The 1928 date, one year after the flight, coincides with the peak of "Lindbergh mania" when public fascination with the aviator was at its height. Silver composition indicates a premium commemorative rather than a mass-produced souvenir. Lindbergh medals are one of the most actively collected areas of aviation numismatics.
Rarity Notes
FH-645, silver, 1928. Lindbergh commemorative medal. The most collected aviation subject in American numismatics.
