Description
The 1928 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-72, features President Calvin Coolidge in the fifth year of his appearance on the series. Coolidge's decision not to seek reelection, announced the previous summer, gave the 1928 medal a valedictory quality — this was one of the final opportunities for the annual medal to bear his portrait during his presidency. The commission proceedings examined coinage from the penultimate year of the Roaring Twenties boom, before the 1929 stock market crash and subsequent Depression would transform the nation's economic landscape. The Hawaiian Sesquicentennial commemorative half dollar was among the notable numismatic products of 1928, produced in tiny quantities that would make it one of the most prized commemorative issues. The bronze composition marks standard distribution to commission members at the annual Philadelphia Mint proceedings.
