Description
This silver medal from 1925 commemorates the Norse-American Centennial, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the arrival of the sloop Restaurationen from Stavanger, Norway, to New York in 1825 — the beginning of organized Norwegian immigration to America. The Norse-American Centennial was a major cultural event for the Norwegian-American community, centered in Minneapolis-St. Paul, which had the largest concentration of Norwegian Americans in the United States. The silver composition distinguishes this from the more common bronze versions and the famous Norse-American Centennial commemorative half dollar (the first U.S. commemorative to feature a non-American subject). The medal helped document and celebrate the Norwegian contribution to American life, including settlement of the upper Midwest, contributions to agriculture and industry, and the preservation of Scandinavian cultural traditions. Norwegian-American numismatic items from the centennial are actively collected by both general numismatists and Scandinavian heritage enthusiasts.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Silver Norse-American Centennial medals are less common than the bronze versions. Related to the famous 1925 Norse-American commemorative half dollar.
