Description
The 1924 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-68, features President Calvin Coolidge, who had assumed office upon the death of Warren G. Harding in August 1923. "Silent Cal" was known for his taciturn temperament, laissez-faire economic philosophy, and dry New England wit — qualities that contrasted dramatically with the gregarious, scandal-plagued Harding administration he inherited. The 1924 medal inaugurated Coolidge's extended run on the Assay Commission series that would span his full presidency. The commission proceedings examined coinage from a year of continued Roaring Twenties prosperity, when Mint production remained stable across all denominations. Coolidge's portrait captures the austere, thin-featured Vermonter whose approach to governance was famously minimalist — "The chief business of the American people is business," he declared. The bronze composition marks this as the standard version for commission member distribution.
