1923 Assay Commission Medal - JK-AC-67, Silver, Warren G. Harding
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1923 Assay Commission medal in silver, cataloged as JK-AC-67, is the precious metal version featuring President Warren G. Harding. This limited presentation piece was reserved for senior officials at the annual assay proceedings. Harding's death in San Francisco on August 2, 1923 — initially attributed to a stroke or heart attack but later the subject of persistent (and largely unfounded) speculation — transformed these medals into unexpected memorials. The silver version, struck in very small quantities, is particularly desirable to collectors because it combines the scarcity inherent in silver Assay Commission medals with the historical resonance of being produced mere months before a presidential death. Vice President Calvin Coolidge succeeded Harding and would appear on subsequent Assay Commission medals. The reverse carries the standard commission inscription documenting the 1923 proceedings.
Rarity Notes
JK-AC-67, silver composition. Very limited mintage. Final Harding portrait — president died August 1923. Silver Assay Commission medals are scarce across all years.
