Description

Judd-A1922-5 is a proof half dollar pattern from the 1922 Grant Memorial commemorative program. The Grant half dollar was designed by Laura Gardin Fraser and features a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant on the obverse with a log cabin birthplace scene on the reverse, similar in concept to the Grant dollar. Like the dollar, the half dollar was issued in two varieties — with and without a small star on the obverse — though the half dollar had significantly higher mintages (67,405 without star, 4,256 with star). This appendix-numbered pattern represents a design proposal or variant evaluated during the development of the Grant half dollar. Fraser's work on the Grant commemoratives preceded her better-known design of the 1931 Alabama half dollar, and her Grant portraits are considered among the finest numismatic likenesses of the Civil War general and 18th president.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8. Extremely rare. Appendix-numbered Grant commemorative patterns are seldom offered at auction.
