Description
The 1922 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-66, features Andrew W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. Mellon was one of the wealthiest Americans of his era — an industrialist, banker, and art collector whose fortune ranked alongside those of Rockefeller and Carnegie. His appearance on the 1922 Assay Commission medal initiated what would become a long association with the commission series, as Mellon served as Treasury Secretary from 1921 to 1932. The 1922 commission examined coinage from the year that saw the full production run of the Peace dollar, Anthony de Francisci's elegant design that replaced the Morgan dollar. Mellon's economic philosophy of tax reduction and debt retirement defined the fiscal policy of the 1920s prosperity, and his oversight of the Mint included attention to coinage design and production efficiency. The bronze composition indicates standard commission member distribution.
