Description
Judd-2015, Pollock-2205, is a proof dollar pattern from the pivotal year that saw both the final Morgan dollars and the debut of the Peace dollar. In 1921, the Morgan dollar was briefly revived for the first time since 1904, while sculptor Anthony de Francisci won the design competition organized by the Commission of Fine Arts to create a new silver dollar commemorating the end of World War I. De Francisci's Peace dollar, featuring a youthful Liberty wearing a radiate crown on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse, was first struck in late December 1921 in high relief. This proof pattern documents one of the design proposals evaluated during the transition between the two most iconic American silver dollar series. The year 1921 represents a unique moment in American coinage when the past and future of the silver dollar overlapped, and patterns from this period carry exceptional historical significance.
