Description

Discovery April 2023, Dennis Halladay 38 IV 30 • D2a (Doubled Cap Top, Die Break S) (?) Obverse IV 30 - Doubling on top of Liberty's cap. Left stars tripled toward rim. ''Die Markers'' - Long scratch from apex of cap into field below S in PLURIBUS. Polishing lines in LIBERTY and cotton bolls. Reverse D2a - Die break inside lower loop of 2nd S in STATES. Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle’s right leg and between eagle’s left wing and body. Thin, vertical die crack from jaw of eagle to bottom of D in DOLLAR. Later use of reverse on VAM 1DU. Comments: VAMs 38, 1DU1 and 1DU2 were made with the same reverse die, but the obverse dies were different. None of the VAM 38 obverse PUPs shown in the plate images below are found on 1DU1 or 1DU2.
