Description
The 1919 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-63, features President Woodrow Wilson on the obverse. Wilson's return to the Assay Commission medal followed the three-year Treasury Seal interlude and the single McAdoo portrait. The 1919 medal was produced during one of the most consequential years of Wilson's presidency — the Versailles Peace Conference ending World War I, the contentious fight over the League of Nations, and the debilitating stroke Wilson suffered in October 1919 that left him incapacitated for much of his remaining term. The Assay Commission proceedings that year examined coinage from the final year of the war, when wartime demands had pushed Mint production to high levels across all three operating facilities. Wilson's portrait on the medal captures the idealistic academic-turned-statesman who had led the nation through world war and now sought to reshape the international order through collective security.
