Description

The 1917 Johnson-39 matte silver medal honors Joseph Hodges Choate, the silver version of the memorial medal also produced in bronze. The silver composition elevates this piece to a premium tier, as silver medals were typically reserved for presentation to the honoree's family, close associates, or distinguished collectors. The matte finish is identical to the bronze version, achieved by striking with sandblasted dies to create a soft, non-reflective surface that emphasizes the sculptural modeling of the portrait. Joseph Hodges Choate (1832-1917) was among the most celebrated advocates in American legal history. As a partner at Evarts, Choate & Beaman (later Choate, Hall & Stewart), he represented clients ranging from corporate titans to public institutions. Beyond his income tax case victory, Choate was instrumental in establishing the Metropolitan Museum of Art, serving as its president from 1899, and in the creation of the New York Public Library. His ambassadorship to Great Britain cemented the Anglo-American diplomatic relationship during a period of imperial rivalry and realignment. The silver version of the Johnson-39 medal would have been produced in much smaller numbers than the bronze, reflecting both the higher material cost and the tradition of limiting precious metal medals to special recipients. The matte silver surface develops a natural toning over time that many collectors find aesthetically pleasing, adding warm grey and gold hues to the originally bright white surface.

Rarity Notes

Silver versions of Johnson-39 were struck in significantly smaller quantities than the bronze edition. Matte silver medals from this period are scarce. The toning that develops over time is generally considered desirable by collectors.
