Description

A proof pattern for the Walking Liberty half dollar cataloged as J-1995, following the primary J-1994 entry in the Judd sequence. This post-primary variant represents a compositional or die-state variation from the main Walking Liberty pattern — a copper striking of the silver dies, an alternative edge treatment, or a late die state showing subtle differences from the primary entry. The Walking Liberty design's transition from pattern to production coin was not entirely smooth: early production dies wore rapidly because of the design's high relief, particularly in the areas around Liberty's head and the eagle's breast feathers. The Mint was forced to modify the hub multiple times during the first years of production to improve die life, and the pattern sequence from J-1991 through J-1996 may document some of these early modification efforts. Weinman himself was dissatisfied with certain aspects of the production coins, particularly the loss of fine detail in Liberty's drapery and the softening of the eagle's feather definition. The artistic compromises inherent in translating sculptural art to mass-produced coinage remained a source of tension between outside designers and the Mint throughout the early twentieth century.

Rarity Notes
