Description
The 1915 Panama-California Exposition aluminum medal at 63mm from San Diego commemorates the smaller and often overlooked companion fair to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The Panama-California Exposition, held in San Diego's Balboa Park from January 1, 1915 through January 1, 1917, celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal with a focus on the American Southwest, Latin America, and the Pacific Rim. While San Francisco's fair was larger and attracted more national attention, the San Diego exposition left a more lasting physical legacy — its Spanish Colonial Revival buildings, designed by architect Bertram Goodhue, still stand in Balboa Park today. The 63mm aluminum medal is both large and lightweight, as aluminum's low density makes even substantial medals easy to handle. Aluminum was an increasingly popular medal material in the early twentieth century, offering a bright silvery appearance at minimal cost. The obverse features imagery from the exposition — the California Tower or the ornate facades of Goodhue's exhibition buildings — while the reverse carries commemorative text. The Panama-California Exposition was instrumental in establishing the Spanish Colonial Revival style as the dominant architectural idiom of Southern California, influencing residential, commercial, and institutional building design throughout the region for decades. The exposition also established Balboa Park as San Diego's premier cultural center, a role it continues to serve today with its cluster of museums, gardens, and performing arts venues.
Rarity Notes
The Panama-California Exposition in San Diego generated fewer commemorative medals than the larger San Francisco fair. The 63mm aluminum format is distinctive. San Diego exposition medals are less commonly encountered than their San Francisco counterparts.
