Description

The 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition gilt medal from San Francisco is a gilded commemorative from the world's fair held in San Francisco in 1915. The gilding process applied a thin layer of gold over the base metal substrate, producing a warm golden finish that elevated this piece above the standard bronze souvenirs while remaining more affordable than solid gold issues. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition was one of the most ambitious world's fairs ever mounted in the United States. Spread across 635 acres along the waterfront of San Francisco Bay, the exposition featured eleven grand exhibition palaces designed in an eclectic array of architectural styles. The Tower of Jewels, rising 435 feet and studded with over 100,000 polished glass "novagems," was the fair's signature structure. At night, powerful searchlights illuminated the tower, creating a spectacle visible for miles across the bay. The fair's numismatic legacy extends far beyond its famous official coinage. Hundreds of private medals, tokens, badges, and pinbacks were produced by dozens of manufacturers, creating a rich collecting field that continues to attract specialists. The gilt finish on this particular piece indicates it was marketed as a premium souvenir, sold at one of the fair's many gift shops or through catalog sales to visitors who wished to take home a golden memento of their exposition experience.

Rarity Notes

Gilt Panama-Pacific medals are less common than plain bronze versions. The gilt finish adds visual appeal but is prone to wear, making pristine examples scarce.
