1914 Assay Commission Medal - JK-AC-58, Bronze, Woodrow Wilson
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1914 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-58, features President Woodrow Wilson on the obverse. Wilson, the former president of Princeton University and governor of New Jersey, had taken office in March 1913 as only the second Democrat elected president since the Civil War. The 1914 medal inaugurated Wilson's run on the Assay Commission series during a year of profound global consequence — World War I erupted in Europe in August 1914, setting in motion the economic and political forces that would eventually draw the United States into the conflict. The Assay Commission proceedings during Wilson's early presidency examined coinage produced under the oversight of his Treasury Secretary William Gibbs McAdoo, who also happened to be Wilson's son-in-law. The bronze composition indicates standard distribution to commission members who participated in the annual verification of coinage weight and fineness at the Philadelphia Mint.
