Description
This 1911 aluminum medal honors the Osage nation with the "Wah-She-Hah" inscription and E.K. Elder attribution, the aluminum version alongside the silver (PCGS #932881). Aluminum provided a lightweight, affordable alternative to precious metal while maintaining an attractive silver-colored appearance. The Osage, whose reservation in northeastern Oklahoma sat atop one of the richest oil deposits in the world, were undergoing dramatic economic transformation in this period. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. Aluminum medals honoring Native American nations document cross-cultural engagement during a complex period of American Indian history.
