1911 Assay Commission Medal - JK-AC-55, Bronze, William H. Taft
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1911 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-55, is the standard-issue version featuring President William Howard Taft. The bronze medal was distributed to the full roster of commission members who gathered at the Philadelphia Mint for the annual examination of the nation's coinage. Taft, despite his reputation as a reluctant and passive president compared to his predecessor Roosevelt, maintained close oversight of the Treasury Department and its operations. The 1911 commission would have examined coins from a year of stable production at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints, with the full complement of denominations bearing the designs introduced during the Roosevelt administration's numismatic renaissance. The Assay Commission medal itself continued to be produced at the Philadelphia Mint under the supervision of Chief Engraver Charles Barber, who had held the position since 1879 and would retain it until his death in 1917.
Rarity Notes
