Description
This large bronze medal at 101mm (approximately four inches) diameter, cataloged as Belden-50, commemorates the discovery of the Hudson River, produced circa 1909 during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration. The celebration marked the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's 1609 exploration of the river that bears his name and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's 1807 voyage of the Clermont, the first commercially successful steamboat. The Belden catalog is the standard reference for medals commemorating this joint celebration. At 101mm, this is an exceptionally large medal that would have served as a display or presentation piece. The Hudson-Fulton Celebration was one of the most elaborate commemorative events in New York history, featuring naval parades, historical pageants, and the production of numerous medals and commemorative items. The celebration highlighted New York's central role in American commercial and maritime history.
