Description
HK-370 is a 1909 so-called dollar commemorating Hendrik Hudson Daalder. The 1907 Jamestown Tercentenary Exposition in Norfolk, Virginia commemorated the 300th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America, generating commemorative medals and the Jamestown gold dollar. The aluminum composition represents a modern departure from the traditional bronze, copper, and white metal palette of earlier so-called dollars. Aluminum's silvery-white appearance and durability made it practical for mass production. Miscellaneous national commemorative medals were produced by a wide range of manufacturers, from the U.S. Mint to local die-sinkers, covering subjects from presidential inaugurations to infrastructure milestones. The HK numbering system established by Hibler and Kappen in 1963 brought order to hundreds of previously uncataloged American commemorative medals, many of which had been ignored by mainstream numismatic references.
Rarity Notes
So-called dollars from the early 20th century were produced in limited quantities for distribution at events or through numismatic channels. Aluminum examples of HK-370 are moderately scarce, with surviving pieces ranging from well-worn pocket pieces to carefully preserved specimens.
