Description
The 1908 Assay Commission medal in silver, cataloged as JK-AC-52, marks the sixth and final year of President Theodore Roosevelt's unprecedented consecutive appearance on the series. Roosevelt would leave office in March 1909 after declining to seek another term, and the 1908 medal represents the last in an extraordinary six-year medallic portrait sequence spanning his entire presidency. The silver version, limited to a small number of presentation pieces, carries Roosevelt's portrait at a moment when his influence on American coinage was at its peak — the 1908 commission would have examined the full range of new designs that his partnership with Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Bela Lyon Pratt had produced, including the Indian Head quarter eagle and half eagle with their revolutionary incuse design. The reverse maintains the standard Assay Commission format documenting the annual verification proceedings.
Rarity Notes
JK-AC-52, silver (AR) composition. Very limited mintage. Final Roosevelt portrait in the six-year consecutive sequence (1903-1908). Terminal year examples are particularly sought by series collectors.
