Description
The 1907 Assay Commission medal in silver, cataloged as JK-AC-51, features President Theodore Roosevelt in the fifth year of his remarkable consecutive run on the series. The 1907 medal holds special significance in numismatic history because it was struck during the very year that Roosevelt's campaign to beautify American coinage bore fruit — Augustus Saint-Gaudens's stunning high-relief double eagle and the Indian Head eagle were both released in 1907, transforming the look of American gold coinage overnight. While the Assay Commission medal itself remained in the conservative engraving tradition of the Philadelphia Mint, the coins being tested at the 1907 proceedings would have included the first of the new Saint-Gaudens designs. The silver version was limited to a small number of presentation pieces for senior officials, making it one of the scarcer entries in the Roosevelt portrait sequence.
Rarity Notes
JK-AC-51, silver (AR) composition. Very limited mintage. Struck during the landmark year of the Saint-Gaudens coinage redesign. Highly desirable to Roosevelt-era collectors.
