Description
This 1903 copper medal at 41mm commemorates the 120th anniversary of the Society of the Cincinnati, the oldest hereditary patriotic organization in the United States. Founded in 1783 by officers of the Continental Army, the Society was named for Lucius Quintinius Cincinnatus, the Roman citizen-soldier who returned to his farm after saving the republic. George Washington served as the Society's first president. The 120th anniversary celebration in 1903 maintained the organization's tradition of commemorating its heritage. Copper composition was appropriate for a membership commemorative. Medal iconography provides insight into how Americans have understood and represented their history, with evolving artistic conventions reflecting changing cultural values and aesthetic preferences across different eras. The Society of the Cincinnati continues today as one of the most prestigious patriotic organizations in America.
