Description
=1902-O VAM-31A Near Date, 2 Olive Reverse, Clashed Obverse n & st= Discovered by Mark Kimpton, August 2003. 31A III2 3 · C4/C3p (Near Date, 2 Olive Reverse, Clashed Obverse n & st) (181) Obverse III2 3– Base of 2 filled in. Clashed die with partial incuse n of In from reverse next to Liberty's neck and partial incuse t of Trust from reverse showing in right hair vee of lower hair edge. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # Another identifier for the coin is a counterclash along Liberty's neck pointing towards the foot of the clashed "n". This is not listed in the VAM description, but among other identifiers, can be used to identify this VAM quickly. # Four coins were assembled for the enhanced version of this page. Note that this VAM comes with both a filled 2, and unfilled 2. Of the four coins assembled, 3 were filled 2s, and one was an unfilled 2. In addition, the reverse die was apparently removed and polished and minting resumed. No evidence of obverse polishing can be noted. # Note that no known examples of VAM-31 have a filled 2. From a study of the 4 coins, it would appear that as a VAM-31, the clash/counterclash with clashed "n" and "st" occurred before the 2 in the date filled. Sometime after the clash/counterclash and letter transfer, the 2 filled. At some point later the reverse die was removed, and polished. Then minting resumed with the clash/counterclash, letter transfer, filled 2, polished reverse die, and unpolished obverse die. # Nice specimens show a light M clash above d in God. # The 1902-O VAM-31 & 1902-O VAM-31A were struck with the exact same obverse die and if they were struck from a different reverse die - they have fooled me!
