Description
This 1902 bronze medal commemorates the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in New York, one of the many Civil War memorials erected across the country during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Civil War monument dedication medals document the period of intensive memorialization that honored the sacrifices of both Union and Confederate forces. New York contributed more soldiers to the Union cause than any other state, and monuments to their service were erected in cities and towns throughout the state. Third-party grading services have brought standardized condition assessment to the medal market, helping establish transparent pricing and increasing collector confidence in authentication and quality evaluation. Regional and local commemorative medals provide historical documentation of community celebrations, institutional milestones, and civic achievements that may be poorly represented in other primary source material. Bronze composition was standard for civic commemoratives distributed at dedication ceremonies.
