Description
This 1902 bronze medal commemorates the Army of Cuban Occupation, recognizing American military service during the occupation of Cuba following the Spanish-American War. The U.S. occupied Cuba from 1898 to 1902, overseeing the establishment of an independent Cuban government while implementing public health reforms, infrastructure improvements, and political reorganization. The occupation ended with the inauguration of the Republic of Cuba on May 20, 1902. Bronze occupation medals were issued to personnel who served in this transitional period. American commemorative medals document the nation's history through miniature sculptural art, preserving events, achievements, and personalities in a durable metallic format that has served collectors and historians for centuries. The Cuban occupation represented America's first major experience with military government of a foreign territory and established precedents for later occupations.
