Description
This 1900 token commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of San Francisco, marking the city's half-century since its explosive growth during the California Gold Rush of 1849-1850. San Francisco transformed in a single generation from a tiny settlement called Yerba Buena into one of the most important cities in the Western Hemisphere, fueled by gold wealth and its position as the gateway to Pacific trade. The city's fiftieth anniversary celebrations in 1900 generated various commemorative pieces documenting this remarkable urban development. By 1900, San Francisco was a cosmopolitan metropolis of over 340,000 people, the cultural and financial capital of the American West. This anniversary token records a milestone that would be followed just six years later by the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire that destroyed much of the city, making pre-earthquake San Francisco commemoratives particularly poignant.
