Description

The 1899 bronze medal GW-1023 commemorates the Alexandria Sesquicentennial — the 150th anniversary of the founding of Alexandria, Virginia, the city closest to Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Washington maintained deep ties to Alexandria throughout his life, worshipping at Christ Church, attending Masonic meetings at the Alexandria Lodge, and conducting business in the town's market. The Alexandria Sesquicentennial celebrated both the city's founding and its connection to Washington's legacy. Bronze composition indicates standard production for the anniversary celebration. Alexandria's identity has been intertwined with Washington's since the eighteenth century. The city's Washington connections include his Masonic lodge (now a museum), Christ Church (where his pew is preserved), and numerous buildings associated with his personal and business life.

Rarity Notes
