1899 Assay Commission Medal - JK-AC-43, Bronzed-Cu, William McKinley
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1899 Assay Commission medal JK-AC-43 in bronzed copper features the second McKinley portrait with the dark patina finish. The bronzed copper variant maintains the enhanced visual treatment introduced on the 1898 medal, providing continuity in the presentation-tier production for the McKinley years. The bronzed copper finish complements McKinley's dignified bearing in a way that standard copper cannot match. The dark, even patina creates depth and contrast in the portrait, highlighting Charles Barber's rendering of the President's features and giving the medal a gravitas appropriate to its ceremonial function. The second year of the McKinley sequence saw the Chief Engraver refining his approach to the presidential subject. Having established the basic portrait on JK-AC-42, Barber could adjust details of the composition for JK-AC-43 while maintaining the recognizable likeness. The bronzed copper version preserves these refinements with particular clarity, as the dark background accentuates subtle variations in the die work.
