Description
This 1898 bronze medal at 32mm honors Admiral Dewey for his victory at Manila. The 32mm bronze format was the standard affordable commemorative size. Dewey medals were produced in greater variety than for any other American military figure of the era, reflecting the enormous public enthusiasm for the Manila Bay victory. Dewey's fleet destroyed the entire Spanish Pacific squadron in a matter of hours, establishing American naval supremacy in the region. Commemorative medals serve as primary historical documents, recording events and honoring individuals in a format that was often produced closer to the actual occurrence than published histories or official records. Regional and local commemorative medals provide historical documentation of community celebrations, institutional milestones, and civic achievements that may be poorly represented in other primary source material. This compact medal would have been among the most widely distributed Dewey commemoratives, suitable for pocket carrying or cabinet display.
