Description
This 1898 bronze medal at 38mm honors Admiral George Dewey and was produced by McLain Bros & Co. to commemorate Dewey's victory at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. Dewey's destruction of the Spanish Pacific fleet in Manila Bay was one of the most decisive naval victories in American history, achieved without the loss of a single American life. Dewey became an instant national hero, and dozens of medals and commemorative items were produced in his honor. McLain Bros & Co. was one of many firms manufacturing Dewey commemoratives to meet enormous public demand. The production of commemorative medals in America spans from colonial-era pieces struck in European workshops to modern issues produced with twenty-first century digital design technology and advanced minting equipment. The 38mm bronze format was standard for commercial commemorative medals of the period.
