Description
This 1896 white metal medal commemorates the W.S. Hancock Monument. Major General Winfield Scott Hancock was one of the most distinguished Union generals of the Civil War, famous for his leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg where his defense of Cemetery Ridge was critical to the Union victory. Hancock also ran unsuccessfully for president in 1880 against James Garfield. Monument dedication medals were commonly produced for the unveiling of military statues. The 1896 date may correspond to the dedication of a Hancock memorial. The secondary market for American medals has become increasingly sophisticated, with specialized auction houses, dealer networks, and online platforms connecting buyers and sellers across a global collector community. White metal ensured broad distribution to ceremony attendees and the general public.
