Description

The 1896 Assay Commission medal JK-AC-40 in silver is a presentation striking of the Cleveland portrait from the year of the Bryan-McKinley contest. Silver Assay Commission medals from 1896 carry special significance given that the presidential election of that year was fundamentally about the role of silver in the American monetary system. The irony of producing a silver Assay Commission medal during the year that silver's monetary status was the central issue in national politics would not have been lost on contemporaries.
