Description
The 1896 Assay Commission medal JK-AC-40 in silver is a presentation striking of the Cleveland portrait from the year of the Bryan-McKinley contest. Silver Assay Commission medals from 1896 carry special significance given that the presidential election of that year was fundamentally about the role of silver in the American monetary system. The irony of producing a silver Assay Commission medal during the year that silver's monetary status was the central issue in national politics would not have been lost on contemporaries. Bryan's silverite movement sought to inflate the currency by requiring the Mint to coin silver at the traditional 16:1 ratio with gold, which by 1896 was far above the market ratio. Had Bryan won, the nature of the coins the Assay Commission tested — and by extension, the medals they received — would have changed dramatically. McKinley's victory in November 1896 preserved the gold standard and ensured the continuity of the monetary framework within which the Assay Commission operated. The silver JK-AC-40, struck during the year of this consequential election, documents a moment when the nation's monetary future hung in the balance and the very metal of the medal was at the center of the debate.
