Description
This 1895 brass token, cataloged as TC-598573, was issued by America Lodge No. 385 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) in California. The Odd Fellows were one of the largest fraternal organizations in nineteenth-century America, providing mutual aid, social fellowship, and charitable services to their members and communities. Lodge-specific tokens were used for dues payment, voting, admission to meetings, or as identification within the fraternal system. The I.O.O.F. operated on a lodge system similar to the Freemasons, with local lodges numbered sequentially within each state jurisdiction. California's Odd Fellows lodges were particularly active during the late nineteenth century, reflecting the state's rapid population growth and the important social function that fraternal organizations served in communities of transplanted settlers far from their original homes.
