Description
This 1894 medal, cataloged as SH-7-15, is a bronze-plated white metal piece from the California Midwinter International Exposition held in San Francisco. The Midwinter Exposition, held from January to July 1894 in Golden Gate Park, was conceived as a showcase for California's mild winter climate and economic opportunities. The SH catalog documents this within the exposition medal series. Bronze-plated white metal provided an attractive golden appearance at low cost. The Midwinter Exposition generated numerous medals and souvenirs, documenting one of the significant West Coast expositions of the 1890s. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. Several buildings constructed for the exposition became permanent features of Golden Gate Park.
